Part 2: Cross-border Routing Detours—Your data from North America to Shanghai is theoretically a straight line, but ISP interconnections using the BGP protocol often route through Tokyo, Hong Kong, or Singapore before landing, adding thousands of kilometers for nothing. The latency consumed by this part is sometimes greater than the physical distance itself.

Part 3: Evening Peak Congestion—Between 8 PM and 11 PM Beijing time, the competition for outbound bandwidth toward North America is at its peak. This part adds dozens to over a hundred ms of jitter, often hitting 460ms during severe congestion.

These three parts combined account for over 80% of the number you see. The portion actually contributed by "your home network" is usually no more than 30ms.

Once you accept this fact, you won't spend all night tweaking your router's QoS—that optimization improves the first 30ms at most, while the remaining 430ms remains unmoved.

Let's talk about some "pseudo-solutions" you might have already tried.

These are the ones I tried one by one over those two weeks, and here are the results:

Change DNS?—DNS at most helps you resolve to a closer login server node, saving about 5 to 10ms. It's a drop in the bucket for 460ms.

Switch to 5GHz Wi-Fi?—5GHz is more interference-resistant than 2.4GHz, but for high-frequency, small-packet UDP battles like Honor of Kings, 5GHz cannot overcome physical distance.

Install a "professional acceleration" free software?—Free lines usually use TCP relay, sacrificing latency for stability. It's barely passable for watching videos, but MOBA games will go straight to red ping. You'll know after trying it once.

Upgrade ISP to Gigabit broadband?—No matter how fast the download speed is, the cross-border segment remains congested. Bandwidth and latency are two completely different things.

These aren't completely useless, but they don't address the root cause of 460ms. The root cause is the cross-border link, so the solution must be found there.

4 things you can do locally, then stop.

It's not that local optimization is useless, just that the gains are small. Once you squeeze out that 30ms, the subsequent accelerator effect will be more obvious. Do these 4 things and then stop; don't keep tinkering.

Use an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi—this has the biggest gain, cutting steady-state latency in half.

If your router is dual-band, connect your gaming device to the 5GHz band.

Change DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8; it can occasionally hit a closer login server.

Turn off all downloads for the first 10 minutes of gaming—Steam, cloud storage, YouTube 4K, Zoom; these consume traffic equivalent to ten game clients.

After doing this, use Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test Select a mainland node to test your baseline, write it down, and use it for comparison later.

As for "how many ms requires an accelerator," there's no standard answer. My experience is: if it tests < 100ms, you can manage; if it's > 150ms, don't force it.

When choosing an accelerator, only two types of indicators really matter.

Client coverage: Windows, iOS, Android, router firmware. International students often use PC + phone + tablet + console together; missing one is frustrating.

After-sales: Can you find Chinese customer service if it goes down, and is the refund path clear?
